Decorating Your Home for Halloween
Celebrate Halloween throughout each room of your home with decorations to treat the whole family.
Traditionally, the holiday celebrates the start of winter in the northern hemisphere when the nights become longer and the line between the living and the dead is thinnest.
On 31 October, children celebrate Halloween by “trick or treating” – dressing in costumes and knocking on their neighbour’s doors for lollies.
Halloween occurs during spring in Australia. You can find a wide range of Halloween decorations at department and discount stores, like Big W, Kmart, Spotlight, and Target.
Front Yard & Entrance
Invite guests and trick-or-treaters to your front door with a decorated front yard and façade.
Since an Australian Halloween typically coincides with warmer weather, consider creating an outdoor-friendly space. Decorate with large tombstones to turn your garden into a spooky cemetery. Incorporate your natural foliage by hanging faux bats from large trees and placing black roses and skulls amongst your plants.
Carving pumpkins is a traditional activity during Halloween. Large, round pumpkins can be hollowed out and cut into various designs – traditionally a smiling, spooky face or “jack-o-lantern”. To enjoy your lantern at night, insert a lit tea candle into the pumpkin’s centre. Hollowed pumpkins will last two days outside.
Though real pumpkins are traditionally used and grown for carving, plastic jack-o-lanterns can be purchased at Halloween and homewares stores as a reusable alternative.
Living Room
Get playful with your Halloween decorations and add plush Halloween-themed cushions to your couch.
Keep a candle in the window and light it at night to let your neighbours know trick-or-treaters are welcome.
Consider placing a small Halloween tree in the corner of the room, decorated with miniature pumpkins, witches, beads, and skeletons. The tree adds a twist to traditional decorations and can be redecorated for Christmas a month later.

The meals area is the best place to entertain guests or gather before heading out to trick-and-treat. Decorate the space with treats, spooky decorations, themed streamers, and bunting.
For your dining room, a dramatic tablescape can take centre stage. Use a dark tablecloth and scatter mini pumpkins and candles down the centre. Don’t forget to add creepy crawlers like plastic spiders or bats.
If you’re hosting a Halloween dinner, incorporate spring flowers into your table décor. An arrangement of dark dahlias or purple irises surrounded by black lace will offer a spooky, elegant accent.
Hang warm fairy lights from the alfresco ceiling to make the most of the long sunset and include a few jack-o-lanterns to complete the ambience.
Kitchen & Family Room
In the kitchen, keep it simple with Halloween-themed tea towels, jars filled with lollies, and a few decorative skulls and bats.
Continue your brightly coloured streamers throughout the kitchen and into the family area. Don’t forget more pumpkins and spooky lanterns.
Bake some themed biscuits or treats and store them in a Halloween-themed treat bowl for practical decoration.
Located at the rear of the home, the leisure room is the perfect place to enjoy a Halloween movie as the evening draws to a close. Keep the room dark with only softly lit lanterns for ambience. Make use of Halloween-themed cushions and blankets for a comfortable atmosphere.
